Aircraft Wreck Hunting In The Peak District Holme Moss Meteors Shelf Moor Superfortress

Many aircraft wrecks still reside on remote hillsides and moorlands in the United Kingdom

We spent a few days tracking down aircraft wrecks in the Derbyshire Peak District finding the remains of Lancaster, Dakota, Sabre, Gladiator, Meteor and Superfortress.

We are experienced hill walkers and the walks described are not easy strolls. If you do decide to go out looking for wrecks make sure that you are reasonably fit and have appropriate equipment (e.g. map, compass, food, water, waterproof gear, stout footwear and provisions for dealing with an emergency) with you and know how to use it – remember, the reason that most of these aircraft crashed is that the crews became lost in poor weather conditions and there are several stories of recovery teams getting lost and coming close to disaster.

Please note that all artefacts at military aircraft crash sites in the UK are the property of the Ministry Of Defence and as such it is an offence to move, remove, tamper with or unearth any items without a license.
